Rachel is a confident and well-respected criminal practitioner who is experienced in prosecuting and defending serious and complex cases.

Rachel is regularly instructed as junior counsel in homicide cases including representing defendants charged with murder, manslaughter and deaths arising out of inadequate medical care. Rachel represents clients charged with serious sexual offences and deals with complex cases involving multiple complainants and/or very young complainants. Rachel has appeared in child sexual exploitation cases involving multiple defendants.  

Rachel is a strong jury advocate who is recognised by professional and lay clients to have a down to earth manner and no-nonsense approach.

Rachel prosecutes at Grade 3 level and has been instructed by the Complex Case Unit at the CPS as led junior in two large police operations.

Notable Cases

R v M (2025) represented defendant charged with the rape of a female he had met in a public house. The case involved a lengthy review of extensive CCTV footage which was put to the complainant in cross-examination. The defendant was acquitted on all counts after a 5-day trial at Hull Crown Court. 

R v H (2025) represented female defendant charged with the rape of a small child on a joint enterprise basis. Defendant entered guilty pleas and was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with an extended license period of 4 years.

R v N (2024) junior counsel for the defence led by Peter Makepeace KC. Represented defendant charged with murder. The deceased had a very unusual pre-existing health condition which resulted extensive medical and pathological evidence. Defendant acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter by the jury.

R v HK (2024) junior counsel for the defence led by David Lamb KC. Defendant accused of murder following the stabbing of a fellow university student in university accommodation in Hull. The defendant was convicted of murder following a 7-day trial at Hull Crown Court.

R v CF (2024) Junior counsel led by Peter Makepeace KC represented defendant charged as part of a group who travelled into Lincolnshire to murder a male in his own home. The case involved large amounts of cell site analysis, ANPR data and telephone evidence.   

R v T (2024) junior counsel for the defence led by David Lamb KC. Defendant charged with murder. The assault was captured on closed circuit television. The defendant accepted causing the fatal injury although denied any intention to cause injury. The defendant was convicted of murder after a six week trial at Hull Crown Court.

R v H (2024) represented defendant charged with rape. It was alleged that the defendant had raped the complainant over a 10-year period. After a successful s.41 application, the crown offered no evidence on the rape. Defendant pleaded guilty to an offence of strangulation and received a suspended sentence.

R v P (2023) secured acquittal for serving soldier accused of sexually assaulting a female in a nightclub following a four-day trial at Hull Crown Court.

R v A (2023) represented defendant charged with three counts of rape and six offences of violence. Cross-examined the complainant on inconsistent statements. Defendant acquitted on all counts. 

Operation Copperfield (2022): Rachel was led by Charlotte Baines and secured the convictions of nine men charged with conspiracy to steal and conspiracy to handle stolen goods.
