Amber Hobson achieves suspended sentence for defendant charged with supplying class A drugs.
On the 9th December 2025 the defendant was sentenced for his involvement in selling class a drugs, both crack cocaine and heroin from a flat on Spring Bank. He was arrested after police officers witnessed him allowing known drug users into and out of the gate to the address. Both the flat and the defendant were searched. Officers found a burner phone which had been used to advertise the sale of drugs, scales, bags and weapons within the house. On his person they recovered cash and drugs.
The prosecution suggested that the defendant had played a significant role and that he had been street dealing. They suggested the starting point for sentence was four and a half years with a range of 3 and a half years to 7 years in custody.
Ms Hobson mitigating drew the courts attention to the defendant’s lack of antecedent history, his difficult personal circumstances and the real prospect of rehabilitation. She challenged the crown's categorisation, putting forward a basis of plea which the crown did not accept but ultimately could not challenge. She suggested the defendant had played a lesser role in the offence, acting under instruction from another following threats and in order to pay off a debt.
After careful consideration, the court passed a sentence of 20 months suspended for 18 months. The defendant will need to carry out unpaid work and engage with rehabilitation activity requirement days.
