We are hiring!

This is a wonderful opportunity to join a friendly and growing set of barristers’ chambers based in the heart of Hull’s Old Town, and to start a career as a barristers’ clerk.

A clerk’s job involves managing a barrister’s practice, which includes handling administrative tasks like managing diaries and documents, acting as a business developer by marketing the barrister’s services, negotiating fees, dealing with billing and liaising with clients, such as solicitors and lay clients. They ensure the smooth daily operation of the practice by balancing the barrister’s workload, arranging court dates, and handling financial administration. It does not involve practising the law (e.g. as a solicitor or barrister).

The role will involve general clerking duties across the teams in Chambers, but with particular responsibility to assist with clerking Chambers’ civil team. Training will be provided. The role will also involve administrative office tasks. The role will provide the opportunity for future career development.

We are looking for:

  • Minimum BTEC Extended Diploma and/or 3 A-Levels

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft software.

  • Self-motivated, team-oriented, and confident in handling challenging situations.

  • Good organisational and time management skills; the ability to work in a disruptive environment with competing demands and to prioritise effectively.

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to help out.

  • Professional presentation.

  • A willingness to learn.

The role will start in early 2026, but there is flexibility as to a start date.

We positively encourage applications from all sections of the community and operate an equal opportunities approach.

The closing date for applications is 12th December. Please email applications to wstevens@hullbar.co.uk
